Google has today added a new feature to Gmail inboxes that allows users to edit Microsoft Office documents sent as email attachments. Click the new "edit" option on an Office file attachment and Gmail will convert the file to the relevant Google format, saving it in Google Drive to allow for continuous editing and sharing.

I still prefer to save attachments to my hard disk and edit them there...

I agree. I'm pretty stuck on my trusty laptop and an installed version of Office 2013.
This might be aimed for tablets or persons that do roaming work and in that sense have some benefits.
