Outlook 2007: problems with KB2412171 (14 December 2010)

Post by HansV »

On December 14, 2010, Microsoft released an update to Outlook 2007 (KB2412171) that is causing various problems:
  • There is a delay when switching between email folders in the navigation pane
  • The Auto Archive feature is no longer available
  • You encounter errors when sending or receiving email, in particular if you use Outlook to send/receive Gmail messages.
Microsoft is currently researching the problems, but for the moment the only workaround is to uninstall the update (if you have it, of course).

Details are provided in another MSKB article: Microsoft Outlook 2007 may experience Send/Receive or performance issues after a recent update has been installed on the computer.
Best wishes,
Hans

Thanks Hans...

I was having performance issues with Outlook 2007 and was beginning to think it was my PC and bloated software. Was starting to think about a reinstall of Windows 7 and apps.

Although I was seeing delays when switching e-mail folders, I had not noticed that the Auto Archive feature had disappeared until seeing your posting.

Now, off to uninstall the offending KB!

Thanks again..
Regards,
Bob

As well as removing the Auto Archive feature, the update also removed the ability to manually archive anything (File>Archive).

Yes, the entire Archive feature had been removed or at least hidden.

I uninstalled the update and all is well with the world.

I only perform a manual archive every 6 months... so that lost feature would not have been noticed for another few months.

Bob

I hadn't noticed the missing Archive property either yet, but suddenly Outlook refused to download from Gmail, and I noticed that switching between folders was slower than usual.
Best wishes,
Hans

After uninstalling the offending update, I informed my friends running O2007 about the problem. One of the friends reported that although he was running O2007 and all updates are faithfully applied, he could not find KB2412171.

So I went back into my environment to take some snapshots and provide him with a pictorial procedure of what to look for. Now this is weird... the list of updates in my environment show many MS Office updates which I know covers a wide span of dates, yet they are all shown with an installation date as 12/21/2010... which is date I uninstalled KB2412171. As can be seen from the enclosed snapshots the updates prior to 12/21/2010 is 01/04/2010. Now that is impossible. Any one have any insight?

That's strange - uninstalling KB24212171 hasn't changed the date of other updates on my PC. I can't explain the behavior that you see. But as long as Windows Update reports that you are up-to-date, I wouldn't worry about it.
Best wishes,
Hans

I cannot archive, use gmail with Outlook 2007, and cannot find KB2412171 anywhere at all in my list of updates. Did you ever resolve this problem with your friend?

Welcome to Eileen's Lounge!

It did fix the problems for me. Do you know whether you installed the large batch of updates from the 14th of December at all?
Best wishes,
Hans

I'm currently uninstalling everything with the date of 12/15 (about 8 files total) and will let you know how that goes. Odd that I cannot find KB2412171 on that list, but I clearly have no archive options at all (but the slowness of clicking between folders disappeared a few days ago).

I've completely uninstalled everything in that date range and I still have no archiving features anywhere in my Outlook 2007. I'm so bummed. :(

Sorry to hear that, did you try a "detect and repair" ?
Cheers, Claude.

You could also try a system restore to a restore point created shortly before the 14th of December.

Hans

My system restore doesn't have any dates older than 5 days listed (21st). :(

This is incredibly frustrating and makes me down right angry that the tool I paid for was broken so non-nonchalantly by MS.

I guess I'll try a reinstall/repair next.

Reinstall might be your best bet. I agree that it's frustrating!

I did the reinstall/repair, rebooted and...

And it did not fix the issues. I still have the pausing/freezing when switching folders, and no archive options. This sucks.

Albeit you are receiving some sound advice from other Loungers, the direct answer to your question about resolving my friend's problem is "No". However, we have not had the time to examine the problem in more detail. He doesn't live near me and the communications between his ISP (Rogers) and mine (Bell via Hotmail) is experiencing major lags in sending / receiving messages.

I was going to suggest trying to re-download and install the offending KB2412171 update and then try an uninstall, but MS have removed the patch from their update site.

Bob

OOOOhhh I'm so angry. I can clearly see it was installed on the 15th, but it NEVER appeared on my uninstall list, and doesn't to this moment. Microsoft did something to remove it from my uninstall list, but didn't fix the issue.
