Help, please. I use MS Outlook 2010 for mail, calendar, contacts. Recently added to my Outlook accounts, XXXXX@outlook.com. Already had XXXXX@hotmail.com and XXXXX@gmail.com. Now I have three inboxes, which is fine, and I seem to be getting mail all right and can send mail, but I get this message:
MICROSOFT OUTLOOK HOTMAIL CONNECTOR
"We were unable to sign in to your account. Could not authenticate against the Windows Live ID Service. Please try again later."
What am I doing wrong?
Note: Outlook is my new "send from" account by default. It was Hotmail.
Thanks,
John

Re: Hotmail Outlook Connector Error
I did reinstall the Outlook Hotmail Connector and now it appears to eliminate the error message. However, at the end of Send/Receive before Outlook closes, I see an error. Will try to catch what that error code is.

Re: Hotmail Outlook Connector Error
Welcome (back?) to Eileen's Lounge!
Do you use the @outlook.com account for e-mail only, or also for calendar etc.? If you use it only for e-mail, you might consider removing the Outlook Hotmail Connector and using POP to access the @Outlook.com account.

Re: Hotmail Outlook Connector Error
Hans, yes, I use outlook.com via MS Outlook 2010 for email only. All Outlook.com email is to flow to my Hotmail account and be accessible via MS Outlook. I do not know what you mean when you suggest using POP to access @outlook.com. BTW, I am once again getting the "could not authenticate" error message.

Re: Hotmail Outlook Connector Error
Try the following. It's a lot of steps, but hopefully you'll have to do it only once.
1) Log on to Outlook.com in the web interface.
- Click the gear button to the left of your username.
- Select 'More Mail Settings'.
- Click 'Connect devices and apps with POP'.
- Click Enable.
- Choose how you want to handle deleted messages (that's up to you).
- Click Save.
2) Start Outlook.
- Select File > Add Account.
- Select 'Manually configure server settings and additional server types'.
- Click Next >.
- Select 'Internet E-mail' (this is the default).
- Click Next >.
- Enter the display name in the Your Name box.
- Enter your @outlook.com e-mail address in the E-mail Address box.
- Leave Account Type set to POP3.
- Incoming mail server: pop-mail.outlook.com
- Outgoing mail server: smtp-mail.outlook.com
- Username: the same e-mail address.
- Password: your password
- Make sure that the check box 'Remember my password' is ticked.
- Tick the check box 'Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)'.
- You can decide whether you want to store messages in a new Outlook Data File (.pst) or in an existing one.
- Click More Settings...
- Activate the Advanced tab.
- Tick the check box "This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)".
- The "Incoming server (POP3)" should automatically change to 995, otherwise enter 995 yourself.
- In the 'Use the following type of encryption' dropdown, select TLS.
- Activate the 'Outgoing Server' tab.
- Tick the check box 'My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication'.
- Click OK.
- Click Next >.
- Outlook will test the account.
- Finally, if all went well, click Finish.

Re: Hotmail Outlook Connector Error
I see that I had omitted to change the incoming and outgoing mail servers to the values that worked for me. I have corrected this in my previous reply.

Re: Hotmail Outlook Connector Error
Hans, I followed the steps you suggested above. They all took and then I rebooted the PC and open Outlook. Same error message when I click on the inbox for both Outlook.com and Hotmail.com. The mail arrives, reads fine, etc. but the error message as per my original post is there again.
Do you feel it may be because the Outlook Hotmail Connector is still functioning? If so, how do I remove that connector or disable it?
Thank you.
John

Re: Hotmail Outlook Connector Error
You should be able to uninstall it from the Programs and Features control panel.
I don't have the Connector, and the above steps worked for me to send and receive from my Outlook.com account in Outlook 2010 without error messages.

Thank you. It is uninstalled and now when I open Outlook I get the banner message, "You must upgrade to the latest Outlook Hotmail Connector in order to continue using your Hotmail account in Outlook."
I am stymied.

Re: Hotmail Outlook Connector Error
If you want to continue without the Connector, you'll have to remove the accounts that used it.
But if Hotmail folders disappear, it's probably a better idea to reinstall the Connector, even if that means that the original error message returns.

Re: Hotmail Outlook Connector Error
Ok. I figured I needed to reinstall the connector and I just did. Now my original folder are visible. I will fiddle with the accounts and see what I can figure out. I do appreciate your help with all this. I am convinced it is some setting I have that is making this error appear.

Re: Hotmail Outlook Connector Error
Can you copy the contents of your hotmail folders to some other folder in Outlook, then deinstall the Outlook Connector again. Future emails should be delivered by POP3 so that you can file them
