2010 MSO Outlook Options are "grayed" out

Post by biancaanderson »

I noticed that the options in proofing is grayed out. I was trying to format a picture and none of my formatting tools were available for pictures.
Do you know how I can turn theses options back on? In the attachment, you can see the options that are grayed out. Please help. Thank you. Bianca

A belated welcome to Eileen's Lounge!

I don't think it's relevant that those commands are greyed out in Customize Ribbon - it's the same for me, yet those commands are active when I compose an e-mail message or reply.

In the screenshot below, the Illustrations buttons are disabled because the insertion point is in the To... box:

But in the second screenshot they are enabled because the insertion point is in the body of the message:

Thank you! Happy to be back!

when inserting a screen shot into an email and I click on the picture, generally my format picture ribbon appears, but none of my editing tools appear. I assumed because of the options were unavailable.

Do you have other Office 2010 applications, in particular Word 2010? Or do you have Outlook 2010 without the other Office 2010 applications?
Best wishes,
Hans

Hans, based on your questions above, it seems you are on the right track...
Reading some other comments around this issue, it seems that Bianca's Office folder is missing the winword.exe file. Apparently by copying the winnword.exe file (if it exists) into the current office folder (in program files) resolves the case of the missing (greyed out) picture tools.

Outlook uses Word for some features.
You could try the suggestion from Rudi: copy Winword.exe from C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12 to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14.
If you use 32-bits office on 64-bits Windows, the paths are C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12 and C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14.
If that doesn''t work, I'm afraid you'll have to upgrade from Word 2007 to Word 2010.
Best wishes,
Hans

Hi again,

in the attachment, I highlighted "winword application" in the path C:....office12.

Is this the correct one to copy?

Thank you so much for your help.

Yes, that is the one.

If you have UAC (User Account Control) turned on, you'll be asked for permission to copy a file into C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14.
Best wishes,
Hans
