edge won't open

I don't normally use Edge but FF is giving me a 'connection reset' error when I try to reach my online banking login page (has been since yesterday) so as part of my troubleshooting I wanted to try a different browser.

Nothing happens when I try to open Edge. I've tried all the options here:

Any suggestions?

PS I'm fairly sure the problem with my online banking page is at the bank's end, despite their website saying there online banking service is running normally, since I can reach the login pages of other banks I use.

Do you see anything relevant in the Reliability History? In the Event Viewer?

I found some brilliant advice:

If Microsoft Edge won’t open, the problem might be caused by your browsing cache and history. (...)

Launch Edge, click the Menu button in the top right corner, and choose Settings. (...)

Reminds me of the telephone support line of my ISP: "If you have trouble getting to the internet, look on our website for possible solutions" (this was before the time of smartphones)

Ken, you are not alone.
In a fit of pique I managed to remove Edghe from my laptop.
When I use the (Win10) search tool at the bottom-left of my screen, type Edge, I get the standard response (image below), which makes it seem that Win10 has found it, but when I click on the item(yellow), silence reigns supreme.

I suspect that you, like me, have managed to disable access to your copy of Edge, but I don't know how to reverse that process.

It seems so but to the best of my knowledge I didn't do anything. It used to work but not now.

If I have Task Manager running when I try to invoke it nothing changes, nothing new appears, even if I navigate to the actual .exe and right click run as administrator.

Now you point it out, I can't get Edge to open now, either. I last tried about a month ago, when it worked OK, if slowly...

Meanwhile I went back to a restore point from about a month ago to see if that helped, it didn't.

Just in case the shortcut has been corrupted in some way, you could try typing this into a command window and see if that starts Edge

I suspect we're back to the idea of repair, reset or reinstall - which some people over the last couple of years have found doesn't work.

Since I don't use Edge (except in edge cases, tee-hee!), I doubt I can raise the enthusiasm to go through all that...

I have the reverse problem: Windows sometimes opens a link in Edge against my will - I use Firefox as my default browser...

And I use Edge all the time and do not have issues with it not starting up.

I didn't bother trying this command line, because Everything.exe told me that msedge.exe was not present on my hard drive.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge\MetricsReportingEnabled
which was the only instance of MetricsReportingEnabled found on the registry search
and Edge then opened immediately on being asked...
