Bob,
As you probably know, Mozilla made several changes in ver. 55 and 56, among them some related to performance, but also compatibility with older versions of the browser (introduced in ver. 55). Since different versions usually will use the same user profile that could cause some problems (if downgrading or moving to ESR).

As I understand it, if you installed/upgraded to ver. 55 there will be trouble getting the profile to work if you move to 52.X ESR. The suggestion at the time, before the release of ver. 55, was to either move to 52.X ESR (52.3 ESR at the time) or create a backup of the profile before upgrading to ver. 55 so that it can be restored if moving to 52.X ESR.
Warning: By default, different versions of Firefox will use the same user profile data. Installing Firefox ESR after using Firefox version 55 or above can cause problems such as error messages, breakage in portions of Firefox and issues with some websites. You can create a new profile to use with Firefox ESR or else refresh Firefox if problems arise.

As for (legacy) extensions, support will be gone in the next major ESR release. As seen in the plan, in the link Hans posted, support for Fx 52.X ESR will end in June next year, or around that time.
