Thanks. I had to download to get the update. It wouldn't update from Help > About.

Strange - Help > About worked for me, both at home and at work...

Re: Update: Firefox 55.0 released
It failed for me on two different PCs. Both running Firefox 54 and Windows 10. They both claimed that Firefox was up to date

And here's a screenshot from Firefox 54 running on one of my other PCs...

Re: Update: Firefox 55.0 released
Ah, OK. Mozilla makes the update available to everyone through Help > About for some hours after the release, then throttles it to balance server load.
Best wishes,
Hans

That was quick.
release notes.
BTW, here is some extra info about one of the changes in Fx 55. (I always take a quick look at the release notes, as Hans linked to earlier, and if any major changes also check some blogs.)
You cannot downgrade Firefox 55 profiles

All my Firefoxes still return from Help -> About,
"54.0.1 (32-bit)
Firefox is up to date"
"54.0.1 (32-bit)
Firefox is up to date"

Re: Update: Firefox 55.0 released
My FF portable would not update from Help>About and have been trying since this thread was posted. I am aware that the UK gets updates from MS a day later than the U.S.A.
so I downloaded it. On installation, it told me version 55.0.1 which has been done OK.

Re: Update: Firefox 55.0 released
The last year or so I've had mixed results when visiting pages such as this one: https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/new/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It has many times told me that I'm using the latest version, when I'm not. Help > About, on the other hand, has been working correctly almost all the time.
BTW, I always download the full install file, and do an upgrade in place, every major version release, such as now (54.0.1 > 55), and take a simple backup of my profile. (Covering all bases. ) (Minor updates via Firefox.)

Re: Update: Firefox 55.0 released
I had the same situation a few days ago. I then clicked on the What's new link and it took me to the Firefox site that told me a new version was available and asked if I wanted to download the Installer (not the full package). Downloading and running the Installer did the trick.John Gray wrote:All my Firefoxes still return from Help -> About,

Re: Update: Firefox 55.0 released
Below is what I get if I click on What's New - are you sure you didn't accidentally click the 'X' top right? And interestingly, I seem to have gone from 54.0.1 (32-bit) to 55.0.1 (64-bit)...John Gray wrote:What's New takes me to a description of 54.0.1!

Re: Update: Firefox 55.0 released
Certainly interesting - I am still on 32-bit (not that I mind):

Re: Update: Firefox 55.0 released
I've just realised I now have two shortcuts on my Quick Launch - one to 54/32-bit and one to 55/64-bit!

Re: Update: Firefox 55.0 released
They are moving in that direction.
From the release notes (for v. 55):

Half way down:
From the release notes (for v. 55):
The release notes links to the Mozilla Blog.Simplified installation process with a streamlined Windows stub installer
Firefox for Windows 64-bit is now installed by default on 64-bit systems with at least 2GB of RAM
Full installers with advanced installation options are still available

Half way down:
It might depend on how the upgrade from v. 54.x to 55 was done, at least now.A faster and more stable Firefox for 64-bit Windows
If you’re running the 64-bit version of Windows (here’s how to check), you might want to download and reinstall Firefox today. That’s because new downloads on 64-bit Windows will install the 64-bit version of Firefox, which is much less prone to running out of memory and crashing. In our tests so far, the 64-bit version of Firefox reduces crashes by 39% on machines with 4GB of RAM.
If you don’t manually upgrade, no worries. We intend to automatically migrate 64-bit Windows users to 64-bit Firefox in our next release.

They could at least have been better at telling people what might happen.Leif wrote:I've just realised I now have two shortcuts on my Quick Launch - one to 54/32-bit and one to 55/64-bit!
You probably already know this Leif, by now, but what do you see in the Control panel app Uninstall a program (win 7) etc?
As I understand it doesn't touch the 32-bit installation, done this way (you did), or, let's say, if I had downloaded the 64-bit installer (instead of 32-bit) and done an upgrade in place; one has to uninstall the 32-bit version.
