I read somewhere that there is no way to stop these videos from playing. Is this true? Specifically, The New York Times plays them, which I find distracting. I understand that by using app.nytimes.com you will get a static page, but that is not updated news.
(My FF version is 54.0.1)

You could use the free extension NoScript. It blocks most such content.
In the beginning it'll be a lot of work to tell NoScript which sites you want to allow to run scripts, but it's worth it in my opinion.
