FF 53.0.2 .....It's about the challenge more than the 4 minutes a year I'll save if I can make this work.
MozillaZine Help & 2 articles say that if you do [ about:config / browser.search.openintab .... TRUE ] a Search will Open in a New Tab vs. Same Tab.....Vs. my normal Clk + for new Tab and Search.
Can't make True or false work, created a [user.js ] entry = Nothing / deleted entry ....
I DID succeed in an about:config change to make Open in New Tab populate the end position vs adjacent current topic.
Any thoughts are appreciated!!

Re: about:config Tweak FF 53.0.2
It works for me when I search from the Search box to the right of the address box.
I'm also using Firefox 53.0.2.

Re: about:config Tweak FF 53.0.2
Thanks, Hans, I stumbled onto HOW to do it with a catch.
It works for me now ONLY IF I press ENTER to trigger the Search; IF I Clk the Search Bar Arrow it uses the Same Tab for Results.
I've always Clk'd the Arrow & I presume you pressed "Enter". Either way, I've learned how to make it work.
Thanks for your Reply. All the Best!

Yes, I pressed Enter. I can confirm that clicking the arrow in the search box shows the results in the same tab.
Best wishes,
