How to change this Firefox (Google?) option

Post by John Gray »

Firefox 48.0, currently.

When I enter the first few characters of a Google search into the address bar (in the example I typed 'broa', and the rest was added), the first option displayed is often a website address which I don't want - it has "Visit" at the end.

Is there any way of preventing this specific selection?
Or allowing Firefox/Google to select another?

Has this anything to do with "I feel lucky"?

It's probably a 'sponsored' result...
Best wishes,

Even when the result has nothing to do with a company?
(in other examples...)

Here's a further one where the http://whitefunnel.co.uk website gives a different result from http://www.whitefunnel.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; , and I obviously want the second one!

Probably not what you are looking for, John. The only obvious thing I see is to not have the possible matches show up before the whole line is typed. Open Tools>Options> Search and uncheck the choices shown.

Thanks, Bob - but in my "whit" example, unticking the 'Provide search suggestions' box doesn't seem to make any difference!

It might be stored; try Tools | Options | Advanced | Network | Offline Web Content and User Data | Clear Now.

Howdy, John!

Your message confused me a bit. If you want to choose a different web address (URL) than the first one presented by the type-ahead function, can you not use the down arrow key to select one of the other addresses proffered that have the letters you typed until you find the one you want? Failing that, you should be able to type the complete URL. If it is a frequently visited site, you can create an icon for the bookmark toolbar that contains the web address you want and simply click the icon on that toolbar to select the URL.

What am I missing?

I haven't used FF for a few years now, but, what happens if you select the suggestion and hit the delete key ? Does it come up again on the next occasion ?
Cheers, Claude.

Does Search suggestions in Firefox | Firefox Help offer any clues?

Incidentally, in the majority of cases there should be no difference between "whitefunnel.co.uk" and "www.whitefunnel.co.uk" - see Is it Really Necessary to Add ‘www’ to Website URLs in Modern Browsers Now?

Leif:
I'll read through your suggestion!
And "did you try it?" for the whitefunnel.co.uk options?
No, there shouldn't be a need to add www - but in that instance, there IS!

Claude:
No, the 'Visit' top line suggestion can't be removed - that's what I am would like to do when it suggests a URL which I don't want.

Bob:
True, but the number of times I've hit Enter out of habit and got the result which I did NOT want...

Malcolm:
Thanks, I'll try that later!

Ah, yes - I see what you mean. You realise that now, every time I enter 'white' into the address bar, by deafult I'm going to be offered a trip on the MV Balmoral?
