My default is Google. When I use Yahoo and then ‘dismiss’ a page, the search engine reverts to Google. Is there a way to keep it at Yahoo for my next search on the same topic as entered in search box.

Since Google is your default search engine, Firefox will use that unless you explicitly open another one. I don't think you can avoid that...
