Firefox Add-ons

Post by BobH »

What Firefox Add-ons do you use?

Which ones do you consider essential, and why?

Which ones would you advise others to use, and why?

As you can probably tell, I'm on the road to recovery of my desktop system. I got the Network Adapter driver installed and can no get online. I'm typing from the desktop now. I still have some controller driver issues to resolve and all of my software to recover and reload. So far I have only the essentials: Firefox, Thunderbird, KeePass plus the usual Windows 7 stuff. It's a long and winding road . . .

The only extension I use is NoScript. Over time, I have whitelisted a (relatively small) number of sites that I trust - these are allowed to run scripts such as JavaScript, all others are denied. This acts as a security buffer and it blocks most ads.
Best wishes,
Hans

Open Download and Plain Old Favorites. Get them on the Mozilla site.

I've read that UBlock is more optimised than AdBlock Plus?

I don't use FireFox, but I can suggest two add-ons that I find handy:

- UBlock
- BBCodeXtra

I don't use Firefox, but as a confirmed luddite, I use Pale Moon (a fork of Firefox, which harks back to the good old days when browsers didn't want to be Chrome). I use the following to put back those features I found invaluable in my beloved Opera 12.17 (sadly gone to Chrome-land  )
Add to Search BarAdd any search field to the search bar
Autofill Forms
Close ButtonI like a close tab button top right
FinderBar Tweak
Pale Moon Commander
PlacesCleaner
Private Tab
Secure LoginA handy way to access saved login data
Session ManagerA handy way to access saved sessions
Super StartA Speeddial thingy
Tab Mix PlusDoes stuff with tabs
uBlock Originad blocker which, apparently blocks those pesky yahoo! Ads (YMMV)
WOT
I usually check Pale Moon's repository first then install from AMO only if Pale Moon doesn't have them. (This is necessitated by the developer on Pale Moon forking Firefox so far that some addons don't work)
edited to put the list into a table

Adblock Plus - Surf the web without annoying ads! - for obvious reasons
Advanced Cookie Manager Addon For Firefox | Facebook - useful for easily killing off unwanted cookies
Classic Theme Restorer - because I like it that way.
Close Button :: Add-ons for Firefox - because I like it that way too
ColorfulTabs Download - colours the tabs as above, plus - when you get totally lost - flashes the active one when you hover your mouse over the tabs ...
Born Geek » Copy Link Text (CoLT) - gives you single right-click BB code for pasting links as I have done
IE View - IE View - Launch pages in IE from Firefox - because sometimes it is unavoidable
NoScript - JavaScript/Java/Flash blocker for a safer Firefox experience! - again, for hopefully obvious reasons
Safe Browsing Tool | WOT (Web of Trust) - adds a touch of reassurance

And from reading Stuart's list above, I'm now going to install HTTPS Everywhere

I don't use WOT because DuckDuckGo (my default search engine) shows WOT symbols with all my searches anyway

Thanks for all the responses. I learned of a couple that I added to Firefox.

One that no one mentioned that I use is the add-on for the search engine, IxQuick.

I know DuckDuckGo has been around for a while but I never really gave it a try, until now when it was mentioned again here in this thread.
So the first thing that caught my eye was the rather intrusive insertion of the Facebook and Twitter and other icons in the search links. ( sample below )
I looked in the Options for DDG but didn't see any obvious way to get rid of them?
Is there a way? If not, out goes DDG for me.

I don't know where you got that screenshot from Bob. The main DuckDuckGo page looks like this to me

The search results look like this

I'll echo Stuart's response. My screens look identical to his. I've never seen anything like your screenshot.

I don't recall just how that came about but it was my first attempt using DuckDuckGo. Not even sure what I was trying to search but as you see, there was this blather about FB and Twit and all. I just tried to search Eileen's and got identical results as you without that thing. So, I'll keep DDG as default for a while and see if it occurs again?
