If I open a new tab by clicking the + button to the right of the last tab in use, I get this page (with icons of previously opened pages shown below it).
Why does the google button appear? I have banished google from my search engines.
I suspect that this is a more or less standard page served up by Firefox code when a new, empty tab is opened; but I don't know how to confirm this.
I DID display the new tab page and right clicked to view source for the page but could not find 'google' in the mark up.
???

Re: Why Does Google Show Up on This Page
Type about:config in the address bar and press Enter.
Firefox will probably display a tongue-in-cheek warning, click "I'll be careful, I promise!".
Enter newtab in the Search box and wait until the list is filtered.
Double-click browser.newtab.url.
It is currently set to about:newtab. If you want a blank new tab, change it to about:blank.
Click OK

So, it was served by Firefox but through the configuration options.
Thank you for the instructions, Hans!

Re: Why Does Google Show Up on This Page
The default setting is now the new tab page with Google search box, just like the default Home page that you get when you first install Firefox.
Best wishes,
Hans
