Getting rid of screen overlays/popups

Post by ChrisGreaves »

Firefox 12,0.
Overlay - Copy.png
This is annoying, especially when I want to save the screen image for processing.

The small text box "See the public ..." refuses to go away.
The larger text menu "Traffic ..." is well behaved, and AFAIK all the little x-boxes work to remove Transit, Labels etc.

To date the only way I've found to get rid of the unwanted popup is to reload (F5 function key) Google Maps and re-search the location, turn Transit back on, search for restaurants ...

Short of upgrading to a newer version (shudder!) Of Firefox, is there a faster way to clear up the screen?

I realize that this may NOT be a Firefox problem; it may have something to do with those hated "drivers" on my Dell laptop.

In many cases, it's sloppy programming by the website designer; there's nothing you can do about that...
Best wishes,
Hans

I maintain that today's programs are just too complex.

Thanks for the second heads up, Hans.

If it's really not my drivers or some other occult craft surrounding my device, perhaps someone else will confirm this problem with Firefox, hopefully Google Maps ...

I don't have the problem using "Classic" Google Maps on Firefox 29.0.1 on Windows 7 Home Premium.
So it might be a graphics driver problem after all.
Best wishes,
Hans

Some of these google maps overlays can be removed by zooming out and then zooming in again. Have you tried this?

Really? In which case using such an old browser is likely to be your problem. Google won't have tested their site to be compatible with a browser that ancient.

You people still using Firefox 29 ???

How outdated can you get ?

As for Chris, why isn't he running Windows for Workgroup ? I've got the floppies here if you need to re-install

Seriously though Chris, what is stopping you from upgrading Firefox ?
Cheers, Claude.

Why not go further back in time? I bet I've got MSDOS 3 somewhere.

You got my curiosity up and checked in my dusty 3 1/2" file cabinet and I have Texas Instruments TravelMate Series MS Windows 3.1 there, along with 6 floppies of MS Word for Windows. Plus more old "goodies" from the deep dark past.

Having just struggled to troubleshoot equipment running DOS 6 (MODE command and MOUSE.COM sound familiar?), I'm very happy most items automatically install and update themselves!

Yip!
I essayed with several techniques in a (vain) effort to avoid reloading Google maps and reconfiguring the screen.

I know, I know, but it is becoming harder and harder nowadays to maintain a stable platform and get on with the job which is not adpating to every little feel-good tweek put out by a developer.

Hi Claude. Nothing is actually stopping me except my reluctance to master a new interface when the old one worked well for me.

I know that I have turned into an old stick-in-the-mud, and its unfair to expect loungers to offer advice when I'm way behind (which apparently I am)

I thin k I did upgrade a few months back but got thoroughly confused by the new menu, or lack thereof, and went back to v12 so i could focus on getting the job done.

It's really a tug of war between wanting to pick up where I left off yesterday, using the same tool, and having to spend a quarter-hour getting used to what the developer believes is a much better way of doinf things.

Especially irksome (every version of MSWord) when the shortcut keystrokes disappear, or worse, change .

I'm going to grab something to eat so I don't get any grumpier.

Chris, The Firefox interface really hasn't changed that much. The new version will pick up your old settings, so that doesn't change. You should go ahead and take a deep breath and just do it! :fanfare:
