Firefox 16 released

Post by HansV »

Firefox 16.0 is available from http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; or from the internal update mechanism.
Best wishes,
Hans

 Thanks but I think I'll wait for the next bus, the number 16.0.1. It passes nearer to my house and it's bound to be a long in a minute or too...

You know what they say, wait ages for a bus and then two show up at once.

That explains why I couldn't upgrade Firefox on my wife's computer this morning, after having upgraded mine on Tuesday.

Firefox 16.0.1 should be released later today and that will fix the security vulnerability plus a small number of stability fixes.

There is a further bug they are looking into (bug 799348) which is causing problems with some add-ons. If Mozilla consider it serious enough they will release version 16.0.2, otherwise it will be fixed in Firefox 17. My guess is there will be a 16.0.2 as it impacts upon some add-ons and tools used by some developers.

The built-in update mechanism installed 16.0.1 for me a few minutes ago. It's a large download - apparently the whole application is replaced (usually incremental updates are much smaller).
Best wishes,
Hans

Very large download! The initial installer package (16.0.0) I downloaded was about 18 MB. The update through Help>About>Check for Updates was about 22MB.

Paul

Wow! Were you on version 15.0.1 before the update?
I just updated Fx and it was only 8.4 mb. Quick update.

Strange... I updated from within Firefox at 8.4mb.
It now says I'm running 16.01? Whatever! :clapping:

I'm still waiting for a bus. As I understand it the driver of number 16.0.1 will get upset over my Adblock Plus add on.

It's OK though, someone said the 16.0.2 was due soon and the sky isn't falling, yet...

I hope that's not true, Ken. AdBlock Plus is the #1 most popular Firefox addon, according to the Mozilla addons page.

Maybe a I misread the link to the bug that Tony posted.

I'm still in no hurry to upgrade. I'm not alone, everyone I speak to seems to have reached FF update saturation point. Updates come so frequently now people are ignoring them and are baffled that Mozilla think this rapid release routine is a good thing.

At the risk of starting a debate... I'm sure there are no more bugs in FF than there ever have been but on a slower release cycle they were certainly a lot less visible and so it was perceived as stable and that fed FF's reputation as the best browser. Now it's, "Oh, another security flaw in FF, looks like Mozilla have dropped the ball."

Please note, I'm not knocking Mozilla. It will take something really momentous before I stop using FF. I'm just expressing what I see within my circle here in a small corner of the UK but that won't be a representative sample of world opinion!
