Does anything go wrong if you comment out the line

Not only does nothing go wrong, but it gives the exact behaviour I have been struggling unsuccessfully to obtain for months. The annoying "shadow" no longer appears now.

I do not know what folly caused me to add that line of code.

Everything is well that ends well.
