Does Smart Indenter work in 64-Bit?

Post by Rudi »

I upgraded to Office 2013 64-Bit (from Office 2013 32-Bit). I attempted to install Smart Indenter and for Excel VBA but now it does not show up in the VBE. I am assuming this may be a 64-bit issue. I had it installed on a Office 2013 32-bit and they ran fine.

Is there a way to get this tool to run in a 64-bit setup or are there 64-bit versions of the tool or alternate tool sets that run in 64-bit?

TX

As Jan Karel Pieterse mentioned earlier in this thread, there is no version of Smart Indenter for 64-bit Office yet.

Did you have a pressing reason for upgrading to 64-bit Office? Microsoft generally recommends staying with the 32-bit version (even on 64-bit Windows) because the 64-bit version has lots of compatibility problems and few advantages over the 32-bit version.
Best wishes,
Hans

Not really. I just heard that it provides better memory options and was "faster".
I can choose between the two.

I have googled your advice and every page I landed on confirms your analysis...
I will be uninstalling 64-bit and installing 32-bit. :joy: Then Smart Indenter will work again.

Cheers!

The 64-bit version has only one advantage: 64-bit Excel can handler larger data models than 32-bit Excel. The number of rows and columns is the same (1,048,576 by 16,384) but the 32-bit version wil bog down earlier if you have (very) large numbers of cells with complicated formulas, since it has a 2 GB memory limit.
None of the other Office applications really benefits from being 64-bit. They may perform better in theory, but in practice it isn't noticeable.
And keep in mind that ActiveX controls don't work in a 64-bit environment.
So unless you need to work with extremely large Excel workbooks, I'd revert to the 32-bit version.
Best wishes,
Hans

The 64bit installation answer - Not good i'm afraid.

This is the response I received from the creator of FastExcel, Charles Williams, on Thu 31 Jul 2014, after inquiring whether he had considered including such a facility into FastExcel:
The problem with Smart Indenter is that Stephen Bullen coded it using VB6 as a COM addin, and there is not (and never will be) a VB6 compiler for 64-bit. So it needs a total rewrite using some other technology
I realise how old this thread is but as I found it, so I believe other will too.

Just fyi. You can fix the problem with the indenter tab width yourself with a little vba routine.
