Welcome to Eileen's Lounge!
If you'll have an internet connection when you show the presentation, you can link to the video. The following description is for PowerPoint 2007.
First, make sure that the Developer tab of the ribbon is displayed. If not:
- Click the big Office button, then click PowerPoint Options.
- If necessary, select Popular in the navigation pane on the left hand side.
- Tick the check box "Show Developer tab in the Ribbon".
- Click OK.
You should now see the Developer tab. Activate it.
In the Controls group, click the More Controls button:
Click this button.
Scroll down the list until you see Shockwave Flash Object.
Select this, then click OK.
Drag a rectangle on your slide. You'll see a white rectangle with a diagonal cross.
Now open your browser and locate the YouTube video that you want to show.
Click in the address bar of your browser. It will contain an address like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1V0gm98Xj4g" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Change this to look like this:
http://www.youtube.com/v/1V0gm98Xj4g" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
i.e. remove watch? and change the = to a /
Now copy the modified web address (select it and press Ctrl+C).
Switch back to PowerPoint.
Right-click the rectangle and select Properties from the context menu.
Click in the Movie property.
Paste the web address (press Ctrl+V), then press Enter.
You can now close the Properties window.
You still won't see anything but when you start the slide show, you can play the YouTube video.
Warning: many videos have been set not to allow embedding...

Re: Embedding you tube video in Powerpoint?
An alternative to Hans's process above is to download the video first from Youtube using a dedicated downloader, like (for example) VDownloader. (Please note that the installation could at a lot of "crapware" onto your system if you select the default options. Ensure you are very selective before you choose next... in the installation wizard).
Once you have the video downloaded from Youtube onto your PC, then you can follow the normal procedures to insert the video into your slide. Another important point to make ist that you should ensure you have the latest codecs uploaded to ensure the video will play properly. MP4's and some other compressed formats will not play by default in PowerPoint, (unless you have codecs installed or have converted the video formats to *.wmv or *.avi).
