You can insert a hyperlink to the PDF file.
If you want the file name to depend on the value of another cell, you can use the HYPERLINK function in a formula:

Hi Hans
The cells already hold information, dates and stuff.
Is there another way or is it a pointless task?

If the cell already contains text, that will be the suggested text to display when you select Insert | Hyperlink. This text is independent of the target of the hyperlink:

Re: Link cell to PDF
Yes I see.
I may have to just deal with what I already have then.
FYI, the cell contains a date when a certificate expires which is visual and has condition formatting changing colour dependant on the current date and status ( as the previous post today ).
I was hoping to use the cell additionally to show the pdf certificate if clicked.
Thanks

That should be possible - just select Insert | Hyperlink...
Or is that not what you wanted?

Re: Link cell to PDF
It's exactly what I wanted but I have Excel 2003, the hyperlink dialog won't let me navigate to a pdf doc !!
Or am I doing some thing wrong ?
Thanks

You should be able to hyperlink to any file, including .PDF files! Make sure that you have selected the appropriate item in the navigation pane on the left.
