Data validation list doesn't trigger STOP

I have a column with data validation set to a list.

If I hardcode the list in the validation rule then everything works as I expect.
If I use a list in another worksheet then the dropdown works correctly, but the STOP error dialog never appears if I type in something invalid.

Any suggestions or explanation?

I can't reproduce the problem. Could you try it in a new workbook, to see what happens?

It works fine in a new workbook, there must be something wrong in this workbook. BOTHER

A bit more investigation shows that this was caused by having a blank cell at the end of my validation list. I did this to make it easy to add new values to the list.
If I ensure that the named range has no blank cells then it does what I expect.

You could use a dynamic named range...
