missing day?

I can't see what I'm doing wrong here...

In Excel 2010, the date subtraction 31/07/2015-01/08/2014 = 364 days
yet if I divide the range in two thus:
30/11/2014-01/08/2014 = 121 days
31/07/2015-01/12/2014 242 days
but 121+242 does not add up to 364

I think the first line needs to be:

30/11/2014-31/07/2014 = 122 days

It's equivalent to:

20-1 = 19
20-10 = 10
9-1 = 8
So why doesn't 10+8 = 19?
