Large increase in row height after rows deleted

Post by John Gray »

Excel 2010.

When I delete a few rows near the end of a spreadsheet, I occasionally find that the next row(s) become full-window height, and the only sensible out is to highlight multiple rows, including those with stupid heights, and delete them too.

Has anyone come across this?

There are lots of reports of this problem in the Microsoft forums. The problem appears to be restricted to Excel 2010, and as far as I can tell, it occurs mostly, if not exclusively, in Excel 97-2003 workbooks (.xls), not in Excel 2007-2013 workbooks (.xlsx, .xlsb, .xlsm). So if you're working with a .xls workbook, you might try saving it as .xlsx (or .xlsm, if the workbook contains macros).
Best wishes,
Hans

Thanks, Hans - yes, I am saving it as a .xls, because I have never trusted (or used!) .xlsx!
I may have to revise my views...

I've been using .xlsx / .xlsm for four-and-a-half years without problems. The format has been around for several years more than that, so I think it's safe to say that it's safe
Best wishes,
Hans
