Plotting question

Post by bknight »

I have been plotting my systolic and diastolic for my doctor they are in the format sss/dd. I would like to plot them but I would like to use Excel to detach the two numbers from the text. I could do it with two columns of text formulas. But I would like to simplify the tast.
Any suggestions?

You can also use Data > Text to Columns. Specify Delimited, then specify / as delimiter.
Best wishes,

Ok but I was trying to graph without that step. Any way to do that, have the series a formula to break it apart?

But you may be able to do it behind the scenes.
The attached has a proper Excel 'table' at cell A1 which you can add to.
There are 2 defined Names (Sys and Dia) which are used in the chart series.
As long as the table extent covers the data you want (see the grab handle, a small triangle, in the bottom right hand corner of the bottom right cell of the table) the chart should plot your values.
It complains with a 'Excel has found a problem with one or more formula references…' , but dismissing this with OK and ignoring it seems to sort it.

That is great but I have a procedure question.
1. I have an older edition of Excel 2007 and I'm not sure that I have a grab handle, small triangle on a sheet, at least I don't remember seeing these.

I assume that once the graph has been created then any additions would be handled by enlarging the "series" range.

I'd be surprised if you haven't got a grab handle but I will try and check. Either way the table should expand/contract by itself as you add/delete data at the bottom. Did the file I attached have a grab handle?

If you are referring to a small plus sign as a grab handle then yes it does.
Thanks

Trawling around the internet the Excel 2007 grab handle should be something like:
Image
which when zoomed in isn't a triangle but this:

but to see it the selected cell(s) has to be inside the table.

I guess my comment need to be addressed to a range of cells on a spreadsheet exclusive of a graph series and I never noticed the difference.
Thanks for an education.

PS This is my spreadsheet breaking apart the text into two numbers as you may see in column "F" and "G"

I hope you won't be offended by this suggestion.

You might want to record the time of day when you take your BP in a column. I did what you are doing some time back after having had some stents placed and an atrial flutter. My cardiologist wanted the TOD and the TOD when I took morning and evening meds in addition to the BP data.

Well the dynamic range calculating 3 day moving average has stopped auto filling the auto ranges for both sys and dia are still working. How to correct the 3 day auto filling, without disturbing the sys and dia ranges? I have changed nothing on the spreadsheet to my knowledge with the exception of filling out a lot of data since the last post.

One more day of movingAvg not filling in. I don't know how to set it to auto fill in, nor do I remember why it stopped around the first of the year.

Select the last cell with a 3 Day Moving Average.
Click and hold the fill handle (the little square in the lower right corner of the cell) and drag it down a few hundred rows, then release the mouse button.
You'll be good to go for another year or so.
Best wishes,
Hans
