Modify numbering style

Post by jmt356 »

I have my Headings set to an outline numbering pattern where Heading 1 is 1, 2, 3, etc., Heading 2 is 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 … 2.1, 2.1, 2.3, etc., and Heading 3 is A, B, C, etc.

How can I get Heading 3 to appear as 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3, etc.; 1.2.1, 1.2.2., 1.2.3, etc. 2.1.1, 2.1.2, 2.1.3, etc.?
Regards,

JMT

Click the MultiLevel List button on the Home tab of the ribbon.
Select the style with the numbering style that you want:

How about in Word 2003? Also, i am not looking to choose a new numbering list; I am already happy with the one that I have, with its paragraph and indentation settings, etc., for each style. I just want level 3 to change from A, B, C ... to 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3, etc.

Thanks

That is correct. A notification is just that: a notification and nothing more.

Select Format | Styles and Formatting...
Right-click Heading 1 and select Modify... from the context menu.
Click Format > Numbering...
Click Customize...
Click in level 3.

Select 1, 2, 3... from the Number style dropdown.
Click to the left of the number in the box, then select Level 1 from the Include level number from dropdown.
Type a period, then select Level 2 from the dropdown.
Type another period. You should now have 1.1.1

Click OK until you're back in the document.

I don't have "Include level number from" in my dialogue box (see attached).

Try the one marked "Previous level number"

Yes - that's it! You have to add it twice for level 3, three times for level 4, etc.
