How to Disable the Hyperlink Warning?

Post by armsys »

For Word 2010, say, a hyperlink is set to C:\abc.mmap. When clicking it, Word pops a warning message:
Opening C:\abc.map
Some files can contain viruses or otherwise be harmful to your computer...
On the other hand, if a hyperlink is set to C:\abc.pdf, Word doesn't pop up any warning message.
Why does Word treat .mmap and .pdf differently?

Armstrong

The warning may be generated by Word, but it may also be generated by the file HLINK.dll that handles hyperlinks. See How to enable or to disable hyperlink warning messages in 2007 Office programs and in Office 2010 programs for an explanation of how to distinguish between the two, and how to turn the warnings on/off.
Best wishes,
Hans

I've alrady studied the well-known http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925757" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; innumerously. Alas, it doesn't work.
In Windows 7, it doesn't even offer Confirm open after download option.
Nor does http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925757" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; explain the difference between the two?

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/For ... 8b5b21cc00" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; shows it appears to be an unsolvable issue. Thanks for your help anyway.

On the one hand, Word tries to determine whether a file might cause a security problem. If so, it will display a warning, unless you have disabled these warnings by creating a registry entry DisableHyperlinkWarning with value 1, as described in the KnowledgeBase article.
On the one hand, the general hyperlink handler HLINK.dll displays a warning about file types it doesn't trust. To turn off the warning for a specific file type, you need to change the EditFlags registry entry for that file type. The KnowledgeBase article shows how to do this for the WMVFile file type (*.wmv), you can adapt it for other file types.
Or just live with the warning...
Best wishes,
Hans

HansV,
Your posts offer useful/insightful cues for me to experiment alternative solutions.
For those MindManager 10 users, you can now hyperlink your mindmaps without hlink.dll warning by settign registry value HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Mindjet.MindManager.Document.10\\EditFlags to 10000(hex).
Thanks HansV.
