I know I can put a diagonal border across a table cell but it is possible to split a table cell diagonally? Such that text entered either side of the diagonal stays on the relevant side of the border?
Or should I just use a couple of suitably placed text boxes to simulate this effect?

No, you can't split table cells that way. You could simulate it by entering a left-aligned paragraph and a right-aligned paragraph below it in the cell, but the text will not automatically stay on one side of the diagonal, you have to take care of that yourself.
Alternatively, you might create two triangular shapes and add text to them.

OK, worth asking. Two shapes, suitably placed, it is then.
