Section Breaks are Changing on their own

Post by kdr »

I am trying to add necessary breaks to ensure that the manual I have - already created - will print out with new "chapters" on right hand pages. I have added Odd Page section breaks before these chapters and I have tried to add Page Breaks or Next Page section breaks at the end of each chapter and I have used both! My Odd Page breaks turn themselves into Next Page breaks and no matter what I do my chapters start on random pages...NOT on odd pages. This thing is 450 pages long and continuously previewing it to check my breaks is exhausting and useless after I open it again. How do I get my chapters to start on odd pages without fail?

What software does this relate to? MS Word?

Yes. Office XP. As an after thought, when I go to print this I am assuming that I'll need a blank page inserted between chapters if the previous chapter ends on an odd page and I need the new on to start on the next odd page...I have quite a few one sided pages...and I check print preview to see what will happen if I print double sided - but this means I need both Next Page (to create blank seperator pages) AND Odd Page breaks - Odd page on their own doesn't seem to print out correctly.

Welcome to Eileen's Lounge!

If a chapter ends on an odd page, and you insert an odd page section break there, Word will insert a blank even page when the document is printed. You can verify this in File | Print Preview.
The blank page will NOT be displayed in print layout view.
Best wishes,
Hans

I removed my section breaks and started over. After the last paragraph of my first section I added an Odd Section break and did this at the end of the last paragraph of a couple of sections. The sections still printed on whatever page came next, even or odd, and after I went back to the document my Odd Page breaks had turned themselves into Next Page breaks...what am I doing wrong??

Are you restarting page numbering after the section breaks?

I'm grasping at straws here, but you could try one of the following suggestions I found elsewhere:

- Select File | Page Setup...
- Activate the Margins tab.
- From the "Multiple pages" dropdown, select "Mirror margins".
- Click OK.

or

- Select File | Page Setup...
- Activate the Layout tab.
- Tick the check box "Different odd and even".
- Make sure that the "Apply to" dropdown says "Entire document".
- Click OK.
- Redo the odd page section breaks.
Best wishes,
Hans

Holy smokes! SO FAR it seems to work! This is, of course, because of your genius and you have no idea what a relief it is to see some progress :)

Well, I'm off to make a mile on this. Thank you so much, I'm a happy girl. :clapping:
