At work, I use Office 2007 on a WinXP system. This morning I decided to modify my MS-Word Normal template. I opened the folder for my local templates and found several templates that are grayed out, including—
1. ~$Normal.dotm
2. ~$Normal.dot
3. ~$rmalEmail.dotm
In all, five grayed-out templates; all 1 KB in size. Also noticed a couple of temp files. I know I can dump the TMP stuff. Can I also dump the grayed-out templates? Can dumping them or leaving them cause any problems? What might have caused these grayed-out files?

Re: Template corrupt...?
The files whose names start with ~$ are also temporary files. They are used by Word to keep track of who is using a document/template. Under normal circumstances they are deleted when you quit Word. If Word crashes however, the ~$ files are left behind. You can safely delete them while Word and Outlook are not running.
Best wishes,
Hans
