What is this Update icon / symbol that randomly showed up in my Word document and how do I get rid of it. I can't seem to select and delete it.

It is probably associated with a content control. In which context do you see the icon in your document?

It is in one of the cells of a table.

This generally has to do with a dynamic control. I see it most with a Table of Contents but it could be some kind of calculated field in a content control. Can you prepare a sample document with the problem (point out the table cell) and save it in a cloud location. Post a link here and someone will be able to look at it and give you a more definitive answer.
