Never seen THIS before ! (Word 2003 custom.dic)

Post by ChrisGreaves »

Never seen this one before. It’s a good bet that something on my Win7/Office2003 system is corrupt (besides me!)
Went to F7-spell-check my new document today and discovered that “figure” is spelled incorrectly by a legal transcriptionist (in Delaware) of all people ! ?? !!! ????) and that my Custom.dic is full.

At 42 phrases. Huh?

My best guess is that my Office2003 dictionary needs to be re-installed. Later ….
In the meantime it is a novel experience to eyeball a document, one word at a time, backwards!

Cheers
Chris

As you know, the custom.dic file is a text file. It must be sorted in alphabetical order.
I have no idea what might corrupt one, but looked at the archived KB article.

How many words does it have?

If you can open it in text editor and copy to Word or another program that will do a sort, you could paste back into a text file and rename it.
I have had multiple custom dictionaries and used to have a legal dictionary.

Suzanne Barnhill is my go-to resource about the spelling checker, and she references the same archived article for this message.

Thanks Charles
It had (hint!) 42 lines as a text file.

Second thing I tried!
Still came up with the fault.
I have had multiple custom dictionaries and used to have a legal dictionary.
The next day F7 was working just fine!  :hairout: :hairout:

Then this morning a spelling check failed again, go figure

I suspect that the problem lies in the text (from a legal type in Delaware) and that there is "something funny" in that chunk of text.

More study needed at this end ...
Cheers
Chris
