TOC and Page settings (Word 2016)

Hi all

I have hundreds of Word documents that contain a table of contents and an automatic page number, all of a sudden they are not working, I can't recall changing any settings, does anybody have any ideas?

TOC now shows

{TOC\0 "1-4\h\z\u}

Page number now shows

( PAGE \*ARABIC \*MERGEFORMAT}of{NUMPAGES \*ARABIC \*MERGEFORMAT}

Press Alt+F9 to hide the field codes.

You have Word's field codes displayed. Pressing Alt+F9 toggles Word field code display on/off. You can also access the same setting via File|Options|Advanced>Show Document Content>Show field codes instead of their values.
