Searching for the U+FFFD REPLACEMENT CHARACTER in Word
How do I search for the white question mark on a black diamond background (the U+FFFD REPLACEMENT CHARACTER) in Word? I want to delete all instances of it in my document.

Press Ctrl+H to activate the Replace dialog.
Type fffd and press Alt+X to insert the U+FFFD character into the 'Find what' box.

When I press alt + x, Match prefix is ticked and ffdd becomes . When I press alt + x again, Match prefix is unticked. The search turns up spaces throughout the document, but not the character.

Sorry about that - I should have known that. Enter
^u65533
in the 'Find what' box. 65533 is the decimal equivalent of hexadecimal FFFD.
