I've got a doc in which I think I have tamed the numbering and got it behaving the way I want. I then went through the doc, selecting the (numbered) headings and updating their style to match the selection. Finally I saved my document as a template.
However, when I then attach this new template to another doc although the headings update (font size, hanging indents etc.) they do not inherit the numbering system of the other doc (now template).
What incantation must I perform in order to get the numbering in the original doc (now template) to apply to the headings in my new doc?
Thanks,
Ken

Try the following:
- Open the new document.
- On the Developer tab of the ribbon, click Document Template.
- Tick the check box 'Automatically update document styles'.
- Click OK.
- Unless you want the styles in the document to be permanently linked to those in the template, repeat the above steps, but this time clear the check box.
(Some garlic and a silver stake may help too... )

Umm, that was how I attached the template. It was because that didn't work as I expected I came here.HansV wrote:Try the following:
I suspect that despite me 'updating style to match selection' those changes did not end up in the template after all, hence the update style tick box didn't do anything.
OK, no matter, that was only version 1 and everyone knows nothing is right until version 3. I'll try again tomorrow. That will also give me time to pick up some garlic.
Thanks,
Ken

Ticking the 'Automatically update document styles' check box did update the numbering in a quick experiment. So hopefully it'll work for you in version 2, or 3, or 4...
Best wishes,
Hans

At the risk of invoking Murphy's Law, it looks like I've got it right with version 2 and NO garlic.
