Word 2003 - hard-hyphen hard-plus

Here I am, complaining as usual, this time about DVD machines and their nefarious manufacturers.

I typed “DVD-RW” then thought to go back and overtype the hyphen with a hard-hyphen, Shift-Ctrl-hyphen.
Then on a whim, knowing it wouldn’t work, I replaced the plus sign with a Ctrl-Shift-plus and waddyaknow! It seems to work.
(1) I didn’t know that MSWord had a hard-plus
(2) So of course I didn’t know that the hard-plus would appear raised and smaller than the regular plus and
(3) It seemed to me that my hard-hyphen was smaller than the regular hyphen, but it wasn’t.
(4) My little “DisplayCharacterCode” macro tells me that the hard-plus and the regular plus are both CHR(043) but the soft-hyphen is CHR(045) and the hard hyphen is CHR(030); I find it odd that the scheme lacks consistency.

Ctrl+Shift+plus is the keyboard shortcut for Superscript. So you haven't created a "hard plus", but a superscripted ordinary plus instead.

Just FYI, the keyboard shortcut for Subscript is Ctrl+=
Best wishes,

Hans, you take all the fun out of exploration

I'll have to essay again, but I'll swear that the superscripted-plus acted as a hard-plus; I tested by inserting regular spaces ahead of the string and watching the wrap-around.

Unlike a minus, the plus character isn't seen as a hyphen, so it will be kept together with the (non-space) character around it...
Best wishes,

So, Microsoft manages to weasel out of this too, right? (hah hah!)
