OLE Objects and Adobe Reader

Post by arroway »

There seems to be some issues with OLE objects when it comes to Adobe Reader where the latest version of Adobe Reader will not allow OLEs to be inserted or opened when inserted into a Word document. We've tested this on our machines after the update. Documents that have PDFs inserted through the Insert/Object/Create from File to select the pdf and display as icon (this embeds the file into the document) are unopenable with the newest version of Adobe Reader.

Apparently, the latest version of Adobe Reader (the free version) does not support the OLE object. I have the paid-for version of Adobe Acrobat Pro which hadles these just fine but my collegues across our network only have the Reader. Our suspicion is that Adobe pushed this out to force users to use their converter which you have to pay for.

The solution, we think, is to roll the version back but IT is complaining about doing their work and is asking if there's another way of inserting pdfs into the documents. There isn't anything else that I know of but I thought I'd ask here.

Does anyone know of anything?

What is the error message that Adobe Reader users get when they double-click a PDF file embedded into Word?
Best wishes,
Hans

The error message when trying to open a PDF embedded in Word is,

"Microsoft Office Word is waiting for another application to complete an OLE action."

I meant to type Word. I updated it. ...but it's Excel too. And yes, I'm sure. -D.

Let the user(s) try the following in Adobe Reader:

- Select Edit > Preferences...
- In Adobe Reader DC, select Security (Enhanced); in older version, select General.
- Clear the check box 'Enable Protected Mode at Startup'.
- Click OK.

Does that help?
Best wishes,
Hans
