Create Help Link by Inserting Custom File Object

Post by arroway »

Can you insert a file by using a custom icon and making it so there's no caption? I'd like to connect a help document to the file itself (like Insert/Object/Create From File does) but I'd like to use my own icon and not have any text below it. Is that possible? I have an icon file but I'd like to control the size of it. I'd like to connect it this way vs. linking it to a file as this document will be sent out and links on it would not connect back to the server.

Thank you,
Dax

On the Insert tab of the ribbon, in the Text group, click Object > Object...
In the Object dialog, activate the 'Create from File' tab.
Click Browse..., select the help document, and click Insert.
Tick the check box 'Display as icon'.
Click the 'Change Icon...' button below the icon.
In the 'Change Icon' dialog, click Browse...
Select an icon file and click Open.
Enter a space in the Caption box (this is the best you can do - if you clear the Caption box, you'll get the file name as caption).
Click OK, then OK again.

A space for the caption. That works! But for the icon, I can't seem to control the size. There are re-size handles (or so they seem) which don't do anything. And I've tried creating different sizes of the icon file (32x32, 16x16) but the icon remains the same size and the box it creates doesn't change or seem to have any controls. Have you found any way of munipulating these?

Right-click the icon and select Picture from the context menu.
In the Format Object dialog, activate the Size tab.
Either specify the height or width in inches, or change the scale percentage for height or width.
Then click OK.

Unfortunately, this will resize the entire box, including the white space.

I only have these options when I Right-Click the icon:
(How do you get those pictures in there?!?)

Cut
Copy
Past Options
Document Object
Open
Convert
Borders and Shading
Insert Caption
Insert Table
Delete Cells
Draw Table
Hyperlink

There's no Picture. ...you do mean to click on the icon after it's been inserted into the document, right? Cuz right-clicking on the icon file where I have it store on my machine doesn't inclue a Picture option either.

Just in case it's a version issue, I'm on a PC, running Win7, working with Word 2010.

Crap! IT's in a table. That's why it wasn't coming over. I can adjust outside the table then drag it into the table.

I meant to right-click the object icon that you inserted into the Word document. This is the right-click menu that I see:

I'm using Word 2016.
