Replace asterisk with bullet

Post by Rudi »

Hi,

Trying to replace asterisk with bullet, but the result adds the bullet and retains the asterisk?
If I put a space in the replace text box, it replaces the asterisk with a space, but, being fussy, I don't want the space either...just the bullet.

Is there any specific method to replacing the asterisk with the bullet other than spacing? How can I say replace asterisk with "" (nothing)?

Tick the check box "Use wildcards".
In the "Find what" box, enter (\* )(*)
In the "Replace with" box, enter \2
Specify "List Bullet" as style.
Click "Replace All"
Best wishes,
Hans

TX
Worked a treat!

I'll have to read up about those codes you used *again*
I studied up these advanced codes "once upon a time", but one forgets about them because of such infrequent use!!!

( ) in the "Find what" box delineates separate parts of the text to find; you can refer to the first part in the "Replace with" box as \1, the second part as \2 etc.
Since * is a wildcard character if "Use wildcards" is ticked, it is prefixed with \ if you want to specify * as a literal character. So \* means the literal character *, not the wildcard.
Best wishes,
Hans

Nice clarification...TX.
I assume then that (*) means anything? which in the context of the setup, is referring to the bullet style? Hence replace with bullet.

(*) means "any text", since * (without the prefix \) is the wildcard for "any number of characters (including none)".

(\* )(*) means: an asterisk followed by a space as the first part, and any text as the second part.
By specifying \2 in the Replace with box, we discard the first part (the asterisk and space), and keep the second part (whatever follows the first part).
Best wishes,
Hans
