Line break before a footnote???

Post by New Daddy »

This is a first for me.

Word 2013 is breaking lines before a footnote!! Never had this happen to me before.

File-Option-Typography shows that the first and last character setting is "standard."

What's wrong?

In what way? This is in Word 2013 and it looks normal to me:

Or do you mean just above the footnote separator at the bottom of the page?

Try this:

Change your view from print layout view to draft view.
Go to a footnote number in your text and double click on it.
A new window will open in the bottom of your page.
From the drop down, choose the footnote separator.
Delete the space after the footnote separator line so the cursor appears directly after the separator line.
Switch back to print layout view.
The "break" in front of the footer should now be gone.

Rudi

Let's assume the line runs long enough that the footnote number 3 is about to fall at the end of a line. When the line overflows, Word should move the whole word along with the footnote number to the next line. In my case, Word just moves the footnote number alone -- e.g., superscript 3 -- to the next line, creating an "orphaned" footnote number.

Thanks the explanation. It doesn't happen in my Word 2013, and the only mention of a similar problem that I can find is for Google Docs, not for Word.

I don't have a Typography section in File > Options; I assume that it is related to support for East Asian languages. There might be a connection between your problem and Asian languages, but I have no way to check that.
Best wishes,
Hans

Also, ideally there should not be a space between the word and the footnote number which will cause it to break to the next line on its own. If you need a space, you can use a non-breaking space using CTRL+SHIFT+Spacebar.

I don't put a space between the preceding word and the footnote number. I double checked.
