Option 1: turn on NumLock, and type Alt+0163 using the number keypad.

Option 2: type a3, then press Alt+X. Remark: there shouldn't be a digit or one of the letters a...f immediately before the a in a3.

Option 3: activate the Insert tab of the ribbon and click Symbol > More Symbols (or press Alt, then N U M).
Make sure that (normal text) is selected in the Font dropdown, then select £ and click Insert.

If you need the £ character often, you can assign a custom keyboard shortcut to it in Word from the Symbol dialog.
Best wishes,
Hans

I can't find the £ character under your Option 3. Which font subset should I choose?

I keep a link to the Windows Character Map in my system tray. I have only to click it to activate and a bit of scrolling finds me what I need.

Here is how the Verdana font first page looks with the £ symbol circled in gold (appropriately).
