Morning all
So far I have 5 sections, I have assigned them to 'Heading 1' and when I create an index they are added correctly, however section 5 has subsections for which I have used the inbuilt numbering but none of that seems to get picked up, what I would expect to see is
5. Building Security
... 5.1 Passes
.......5.1.1 New Employee's
.......5.1.2 Existing employee's
I am no doubt doing something wrong but for the life of me can't see what (I am not very experienced with using Index so it is probably something very simple)
Cheers

Re: Index (Word 2003)
I'm a bit confused?
Are you referring and using to the Indexing feature (to create an index at the end of your document) or are you using the Outline Numbering system to create numbered paragraphs?
To use an index, you need to mark off index entries by using the Mark Index feature. Then Word will automatically create an alphabetic index at the end of your document. You OP seems to be referring to outline numbers though...
Please clarify.

Re: Index (Word 2003)
Thank you both for looking
I refer to it as an index but yes in Word 2003 they call it Table of Contents, my mistake, to be clear
Insert - Reference - Index and Tables - Table of Contents
In the past when I have done this I select the style of Heading (1,2, 3 etc.) and it indents them on (what I refer to as) Index and it also picks up auto numbering, so for example:-
Heading 1
...Heading 2
...............2.1
...............2.1
etc.

Re: Index (Word 2003)
Try updating the Table of Contents (select it and press F9, then select 'Update entire table'.
Or delete the Table of Contents and insert a new one.

Re: Index (Word 2003)
The "2.1" needs to be defines as Heading 3, the table of contents works off of the "Heading" style.
If you add more subsections and want them included these also must be a heading style 4, 5 ,6 and etc.
But this will cause things to not work properly, see your other thread about the auto numbering not working.
