Word 2013 can't save in DOCX format

Post by New Daddy »

This is really strange.

All of a sudden, Word keeps failing to save document in the DOCX format. I keep getting the error that the file is read-only, being forced to save it under another name. The trouble doesn't end there. When I later go back to that folder, nothing was actually saved!

The workaround I found was that saving in the old DOC format doesn't cause this problem.

Any idea?

Can you save a docx file if you create a new document ? (I haven't heard of this problem before)
Cheers, Claude.

Now I can't seem to reproduce the symptom. I'll come back when it occurs again.

I'm having this problem again.

I'm also witnessing the following, which may be the effect, not the cause, of my problem:

In the folder in which that I'm trying to save the draft, I see a ".tmp" being created momentarily and being erased whenever Word succeeds in saving the document. When Word fails to save the document and brings up the "Save As" dialogue box, I don't see any ".tmp" file being created.

Does this have anything to do with my problem? Is something that's keeping Word from creating a .tmp file possibly the cause of this issue?

Does the problem occur in a folder on your local hard disk, or on a network disk, or both?
Best wishes,
Hans

It's actually a cloud folder -- Onedrive folder. But I have switched on the "Save to Computer by default" option.

No. I had that option turned on all along.

Still - I wouldn't try to edit documents directly in a cloud folder, even though it should technically be possible.

Why not?

I had no problem with that practice - saving in a cloud folder - with Word 2003.

One more key observation:

As I stated earlier, this issue doesn't arise when I save in the DOC (Word 2003) format.

From what I can tell from the status bar that shows the progress of the file-saving, Word patiently "waits" until it can save when I use the DOC format. I.e., there is a delay before the progress bar in the status bar begins to fill up.

But when I save in the DOCS format, Word does not wait! When Word can't fill the progress bar -- for whatever reason -- it brings up the "Save as" dialog box.

Can anyone explain this?

I found the culprit.

It's the anti-virus software that I started using recently. For some reason, it examines DOCX files more thoroughly than it dos DOC files, causing delays and failures in saving DOCX files more frequently. With the anti-virus software turned off, this issue doesn't arise.

I'd look for a different anti-virus program - it's not a good idea to work with anti-virus software disabled. There are several good free anti-virus applications, and many paid ones, of course.
Best wishes,

Thanks for the feedback. In addition to Hans's comment, check to see if the anti virus app doesn't have any exceptions for file types.
