Hi,

See these two links for all you need to know...

-- Microsoft: What’s the Difference Between Office 365 and Office 2016?

If your absence does not affect them, your presence didn't matter.

I am in the process of purchasing a new PC (nightmare!) and of course I'm going to need Office. I was floundering, wondering what package I needed, lifetime licence vs office 365 etc., until I saw your helpful links. I think all is now clear (?). Many thanks.

PS : Re : Office 365. I saw a link from you to some more FAQs in another posting. This says that the products like Word, Excel etc are actually installed on the PC. Are the files they create also stored on the PC - or do they automatically go to the cloud?

PPS : Just read some more FAQs one of which says that the user can choose whether to have docs stored in OneDrive or locally on the PC, so ignore my question, please.

That is up to you to decide. By default, documents are stored on Onedrive, but it is easy to change this to a folder on your own PC:
- Select File > Save in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, ...
- Click Save in the navigation pane on the left hand side of the Options dialog.
- Tick the check box "Save to computer by default".
- Specify a folder on your hard disk as Default save location.
- Click OK.
Best wishes,
Hans

I may be wrong but I have a memory of reading that Office 2019, which is due out late 2018, will only be available as a subscription.

What I have heard is that there will be both a one-time purchase version and a subscription version, but both will be delivered as click-to-run installations (the way Office 365 works).
Best wishes,
Hans

And, I would hope that Office 365 in its current subscription state will automatically include the Office 2019 features.

Bob

If you have an Office 365 subscription, your Office 2016 will automatically be upgraded to Office 2019.

Thanks! At my last renewal the annual cost went from Cdn$99 to Cdn$109. Still a great deal IMHO.

Office 365 is pretty good value, but I would really like to have Visio as well, and that would cost me more than the whole of the rest of Office! Strange pricing model.

Bob,

I'm still using the Office 2007 I purchased in 2008.

Glad I'm not paying annually, or I'd have paid over $1,000 for the "privilege" of using Office.

Amatuer, I've got a fully functional copy of Office 97, purchased in 1997, running on an XP box.

Ken
:whisper: OK that's a slight stretching of the truth, the XP box was retired late last year because it got to the stage where the boot process involved at least two, sometimes three, restarts before the desktop appeared - but once it did boot it was fine.

Stuck,

If you really do have a copy of Office 97 then I might ask you for a favour, I have a very old PowerPoint 95 file that I can no longer open and I would love to get it saved to a slightly newer version!

Yes, as long as I can get the XP box to boot (been a few weeks since I last needed to go back to it) I really do have a working copy of PowerPoint 97. Send me a PM and we'll try and sort something out.

Sorted!

And it only took two attempts before the XP box booted up.
