Thinking that this is a WinXP problem and not hardware, I've posted in this topic area. (If I've done it wrong again, please let me know Hans.)
For unknown reasons, by laptop gives me the error message in the subject line every time it is booted. I have two USB wireless adapters installed - mouse and wifi signal receiver - and nothing else. Both have been installed since before the error message began appearing. I can't associate the appearance of the error message with any changes or software installations.
When I use the error message to google, I find similar references to it but none that I find helpful; so I've turned to the brain trust here.
Any ideas? (about the problem, Chris )

Remove both and attach a wire mouse.
reboot, if the message is still there ten it is not these 2 devices. If it still there add the wifi device back and see if the issue is with it.

Thanks, Dave.
I've tried removing and rebooting and adding them back individually. I'm beginning to believe that I have a corruption somewhere, possibly in about:config.

What other devices do you have attached?

None. I only have the 2 USB ports.

Have a look in device manager to see if there are any devices marked with a yellow
If you don't know how to run device manager then see http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article01-420

Device Manager is clean, nary a yellow exclamation point nor question mark.

Can you run the Windows XP "Add Hardware" wizard, to see what it says.

I've never heard of Device Detector before this but Googling the name shows a number of hits pointing to a program by "ACDSee" which apparently is used by some digital cameras. Do you use anything like this ACDSee thing?
Also some discussion at this site, talking about Device Detector?

Re: Device Detector has encountered a problem and needs to c
Running the Add Hardware wizard - without adding anything or checking any devices - seemed to have done the trick.
Thanks you, StuartR!
