But on a old CAD system that had those LARGE 300 meg removable platters, we had to keep them level to keep the data from sliding over the edge. So in these videos, the cases should have been keep level, also, right?

So popping a "ChkDsk D: /F" command into the start-of-month batch run would be a help.

CHKDSK /F does not check the disk for bad sectors. It only checks the file system metadata (and fixes any problems it finds).
CHKDSK /R will check every block on the disk for errors, locating any bad sectors. It takes much longer than CHKDSK /F

And if you hear any of these sounds, you know that there are problems ahead... (Most people do have a cover on their HDDs and some fans in their cases, as well as having their computer cases some feet away, so the sound will not be as loud as in these examples, obviously.) The (computer) geeks among us will probably recognise some of them.
