I have just purchased a new HP laptop with Windows 7 loaded. It is threatening to install a bunch of updates when I next shut down. Can someone tell me how to take control of when WU updates are downloaded and when they are installed?

Control Panel > Windows Update > Change settings

You need to install ALL of these updates, but not the optional ones or hardware ones.
