summary tag in properties of a pdf file

one of my colleuges is looking at a folder on the server full of pdf files the files details have been changed so you can see the author, title and the subject this was don on xp but when you try to look at them in windows 7 there is no tag and in the folder the fields for author, title and subject are blank

In Windows XP, you could store metadata such as author and title for any file if you used NTFS. These metadata weren't stored in the files but in the file system. So the metadata didn't travel with the files (except for file types that store metadata within the files themselves such as Word documents and MP3 files). Microsoft decided to drop this system in Windows Vista. Now only file types that support tags stored in the files themselves show metadata...
