MediaShow, CinemaNow, Cyberlink, Roxio, and PCdeCrapifier

Post by ChrisGreaves »

After I click "Submit" I'm going to have a nice lie-down with a cup of tea.

This morning I got tired of the sluggishness of the Win7 Home Edition Compaq Presario CQ62 Notebook, and Task Manager showed me something called "CinemaNow". I don't watch movies (except for YouTube clips of Rowan Atkinson) so I figured to eradicate CinemaNow.

Hans's post suggested (to my mind) that Cyberlink might be the cause of the sluggishness of my mouse, and a post from HeyJude mentioned PCDecrapifier.

So I d/l and ran PCDecrapifier.

Two hours later ...
  • I think PCDecrapifier is way slower than RevoUninstaller, but I have no way of measuring which does the better job.
  • PCDecrapifier seemed to "lose" modality of screens; part of the 2 hours was spent waiting for it to finish a deletion only to find that a confirmation dialog was sitting behind another GUI form.
  • PCDecrapifier works in Batch mode - I can click a set of programs to be removed, whereas RevoUninstaller works on one installation at a time.
  • Both programs require me to sit-and-click; I'd much prefer something that would let me vent my spleen with a single burst from an AK-47 or similar.
  • Cyberlink took the lion's share of time; it had an unbelievable number of folders and files.
  • I now wish I'd recorded folders/files/bytes on Drive C before and after.
  • PCDecrapifier seemed to hang; a couple of times I fired up TaskManager and cancelled MSIExec.exe (I think that is the correct spelling).
I have since rebooted to type this in.
If Windows7 is still functioning tomorrow I'll type in whether I think it seems faster.

I rather wish there was a button marked "Strip Windows down to bare essentials" for people like me who just want to use the computer ... ( )

I hear the whistle on the kettle ...

I'd be willing to bet you don't have a smartphone, Chris. An unrooted android phone would drive you round the bend even faster than Windows can. :hairout:

Use What's in Startupto see what all is starting with Windows. Scroll down a ways to find the download link. Get rid of anything you don't need running whenever you start windows. This might make a big difference.

Hi Chris!

Have you tried CCleaner?

It's free. It does a creditable job of cleaning up the detritus left around by Windows and applications that run under it and the dregs drug up by web surfing. It also allows you to control which cookies are deleted when cleaner is run (supposedly, I've never been able to get it to work for me). It also does a fair job of finding and fixing Registry errors. It is not very aggressive as Registry repair tools go, and I'm yet to have a problem from using it. Finally, it has a means of easily managing the start menu. I don't think it can control which Windows components are started but does control what apps run at start up.

I use it with WinXP. I think it runs equally well with Win7 but don't know for sure.

I have a cell phone that sits in the stationery closet; I take it out once a month ...
