After installing my new router, the upright parallel bars icon for wifi signal strength disappeared and this one . . .
. . . appeared.
What is it? How can I get rid of it? How can I get my stacked bar signal strength icon back?
(but not for Rudi, he's had enough)

Re: What Is This Icon?
It is the network icon, and the red cross means "not connected". Since you managed to post your question, I assume that you ARE connected.
I'd wait a bit to see if the icon refreshes itself automatically to display wifi signal strength.

Re: What Is This Icon?
The icons in the system tray are sometimes "sticky".
As Hans says, just wait a while and see if it refreshes.
You must have had a cable connection and then pulled it out. Try disconnecting and reconnecting on WiFi, or logging off and back on.
BTW: 1 more won't hurt...I'm not driving or anything

Re: What Is This Icon?
Thanks, guys!
I did have a laptop connected via Ethernet connection when first setting up the router; however the symbol is appearing on my desktop screen and this system has never been Ethernet connected to this router. I have powered down and up a couple of times since the installation.
Thanks again!

Does your desktop have connection or are you posting from the laptop?

Re: What Is This Icon?
Update:
I looked at CP > Taskbar Tab > Customize and found the icon displayed thusly:
I could not find any option to change the icon, only to choose if it is displayed with notifications or not at all.

Re: What Is This Icon?
You cannot change that icon yourself, its status is - or should be - maintained by Windows.
Best wishes,
Hans

" this system has never been Ethernet connected to this router"
Are you saying that you are connecting wireless then?
If so, then this is showing that you are NOT connected by wire. It is the standard wire connection icon.
Then you will want to select the Network Icon, to "Hide icon and notifications" in the Notifications area.

Re: What Is This Icon?
Strange things are happening.
I came back to read new replies. I followed the link that Rudi posted but I decided to take Dave's advice and went back into CP > Taskbar . . . to set it to stop displaying the Network (cabled) icon. While doing so, I got a Windows message saying that Windows Explorer had stopped working. After clearing that error message I went back to CP and found the wifi icon displayed instead of the network icon. I cleared out of that. Lo and behold . . . the bars are back.
I never followed the steps in the link Rudi sent.
I'm beginning to think I'm going to have to name this system and set up a 401k for it.
