System restore

.....a friend just phoned to ask if I knew of a way to kick start System Restore in windows 7 but seeing I am cemented into XP I wasn't able to help. I talked him through the steps required in XP if one wished to create a restore point but he said his version does not display the two options [Restore my computer to an earlier time] & [Create a restore point]. In the event that one does not Create a restore point, does Windows 7 ever do it automatically? I've suggest he sign up for the lounge and ask the question himself but in the meantime if anyone can suggest how he can access System Restore I will send him the reply. Regards Dave.

Yes, Windows 7 does create restore points automatically from time to time.
