Task Scheduler

Post by RonH »

Something is waking my pc at 02.00
This is what I can find in the Event Viewer and in Command Prompt ...
PC wake up.JPG
Wake.JPG
How can I investigate further to find out what this is ... I have no knowledge of 'Task Scheduling' and don't recall ever setting a User schedule.
Could this be an external, unwelcome influence. I Sleep my pc when not in use but if it is woken then network connection will occur. My mouse is also turned off because even though I have set it not to wake the pc it will if moved! And its a Microsoft mouse
Thanks
Ron

Just a guess, but it could be an antivirus scan.
try checking the options (settings) in your antivirus app and see if there is an option to adjust the scanning process.

You don't have a cat or other animal that may have jumped up on the table and disturbed the mouse

Sorry...if it ain't the AV, or another scan type program running on a schedule, I wouldn't know.
I just guessed the AV as it has happened to me on two occasions (also at 2am on a Sunday morning as the AV was set to do a DB update at that time.)

Hopefully one of the OS gurus in the lounge will come up with a resolution reg. this.

Rudi

We do have a cat (see my pic) and that's how I found out that the mouse still woke pc until I switched the battery off.
I will do a bit more searching to try to establish what the HID Keyboard Device is.
Enjoy the weekend ... here, in this part of Norway, the sun is shining for the first time in at least 8 weeks :clapping: But tomorrow ... more cloud. I am soooo depressed.

Further investigation shows the following ...
Wake 1.JPG
Something to do with the Power Button?
Wake 2.JPG
Could this be the reason and if I untick 'wake' will I have access problems eg keypad and power button will not function?

I have also checked in Device Manager:
Human Interface Devices HID and none are set to wake the pc, though I cannot find settings for the USB Keyboard (don't have one in any case)
Network Adaptors ... none are set to wake pc

Check in Control Panel > Windows Update > Change Settings...

Is there a setting to check for updates at 2:00am?

Automatic Maintenance is indeed new in Windows 8 (and Windows Server 2012) - see Automatic Maintenance. Windows 7 does not have a direct equivalent.
Best wishes,

Thanks folks.
Leif ... there is indeed a 3.00am Update Setting but I use the 'Let me choose ..' setting so it is disabled. But just in case I have changed this to 8.00am

Hans ... I have found this maintenance setting and turned it off for now to see if this stops the night start-up
Wake 3.JPG
My prime concern is that when the pc is auto-woken the batteries go flat ... I guess part way through some 'service'. At least I hope its not some external gremlin gaining access :flee: I could leave the pc on mains but it would first be good to know what is causing the wake-up.

I will give time to see if it is some form of maintenance setting. If the problem persists then perhaps the next stage will be to close router wifi access when in Sleep.

"batteries go flat" then you need to plugged it in to house power and recharge them every night or shut down not put it to sleep.

Batts only go flat Dave because some 'task' wakes up pc during night ... which is what I am trying to solve

That is WHY you should connect to power or shut it down.
Connecting to power will kill 2 birds with one stone, make sure that the battery is charged for the next day's use and not flat because of the waking in the middle of the night.

Normally I would agree Dave. But I am not looking to allow the 'wake from sleep' to continue and this is the only reason the batt goes flat.
Once I have traced the cause (if possible) I can then decide to stop it, change the schedule, allow wake with power on, shut down every night or sort out the rogue device if there is one.
I have taken some actions today per above so will leave as-is for a week to find out if the laptop is still waking. Will post the result.
